Pacific Grove: Walk of Remembrance

The Walk of Remembrance was hosted by the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. This meaningful event honors the community of the Chinese Fishing Village at Point Alones at Point Lobos and celebrates the life of teacher, activist, and scholar Gerry Low-Sabado.

As part of AAPI Heritage Month in May, the Walk of Remembrance offers educational and inspiring activities. One highlight was the traveling exhibit at the Pacific Grove Museum titled Called to Rise: Chinese Americans in CBI, graciously on loan from the Chinese Historical Society of America. This exhibit provides a unique opportunity to learn about the rich history and contributions of Chinese Americans in the Central California region.

This year’s Walk will take participants on a coastal1.9-mile route from the museum to the Hopkins Marine Station. Randy Sabado, Chair of the Walk of Remembrance Committee, shares, “The Walk of Remembrance is a celebration and recognition of the sacrifices, contributions, and influence that the Chinese Community has had on the history, culture, and economic development of the Monterey Peninsula. It is my sincere hope and desire that the Walk be used as a teaching opportunity to learn from the past and to move towards a society of inclusion, equity, and kindness for all.”

But before the seminar began, we were treated to a captivating performance by the Monterey Bay Lion Dance Team. This vibrant and energetic dance is significant as it symbolizes good luck, prosperity, and the warding off of evil spirits and is often performed during festive occasions and important ceremonies, making it a perfect addition to this remembrance celebration.
